Frequently asked questions

Do I have to mail my passport to the IRS to get an ITIN?

No. As an IRS Certified Acceptance Agent, we verify the passport of the primary applicant and spouse in our Northfield, NJ office and return it to you the same day. For dependents, a CAA can verify only the passport and civil birth certificate; other dependent documents must be sent to the IRS or presented at an IRS office.

Do I need a tax return to apply for an ITIN?

In most cases, yes. Form W-7 is generally filed together with a federal tax return. Some applicants qualify for an IRS exception (for example, certain bank-interest or treaty situations). We confirm which applies to you before filing.

My ITIN expired. Can you renew it?

Yes. An ITIN that has not been used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive years expires. Renewal uses the same Form W-7 and our office can verify your documents the same way.

Does an ITIN change my immigration status?

No. An ITIN is a tax processing number only. It does not authorize work or change immigration status, and we do not provide immigration legal advice.
